Some thoughts on the recent mine disaster.....
I live about 50 miles from the Big Branch Mine that exploded a few weeks ago. The community where I live, Huntington, West Virginia, was built by money from the railroad baron, Colis P. Huntington....hauling the coal and timber away....and coal money.
My grandfather worked setting posts in the mines before the unions were legal. He and my grandmother were turned out of company housing during a strike and had to spend the winter in a tent. My great-aunt told me this story after my grandfather died. They went on to live on a houseboat in the Kanawha River.
Over the past few weeks, I have been reading as much as I can about the aftermath of the Big Branch Mine disaster and current investigation. The following post is the best article that I have found about coal and West Virginia.
